How to Wash your Human Hair Wig - 4 Easy Steps

As a wig business, we believe it's important to inform our customers of how to care for their wigs. Allowing for longer wig life.  This blog post is dedicated to washing and caring for your wig in 4 simple steps.

STEP 1: Rinse

Whether using a sink or a tub, fill it with enough lukewarm water to fully submerge your wig or hair extensions. Ring out the water using your hands and prepare to apply your shampoo.

Step 2: Shampoo your Wig

We recommend using OGX shampoo (these products are usually used for hair on your head too) for human hair wigs and extensions. Their products are gentle on hair, free of silicone, sulfates, and harsh chemicals that usually dry your hair.  Place a small amount of shampoo into your hands and cleanse the hair of the wig from the roots to the end of the wig. Then rinse (as many times needed to wash out the shampoo and squeeze out excess water.  We suggest you use stroking motion with your fingers and not a comb to avoid ripping out the hair knots in your lace. One hand should hold the hair firmly at the lace end to always avoid rubbing as that tangles the hair. Stroke down towards the roots. Remember to also wash your lace by rubbing with your thumbs the inside of your lace to get rid of build-up and dirt.

Step 3: Conditioning your Wig

This next step is to condition your wig. We recommend you use the OGX conditioner as it is free of silicone, sulfates, and other harsh chemicals. Start by putting a generous amount of conditioner on the hair and try to avoid the lace (as this will cause build-up) Gently comb through the hair using your fingers to avoid hair loss. After leaving the conditioner in for some time, use colder water to rinse the product off and squeeze the hair dry.  Tip: Leave in the conditioner for about 20- 30 mins to allow the hair to soak up the benefits of the conditioner and makes the hair soft ( human hair wigs dry out more than natural hair).

Step 4: Dry and Style your wig

Once you have washed and conditioned your wig, it's time to dry your hair. Roll your wig in a towel and gently twist to get the excess moisture out of your hair and then unwrap and air dry your hair until dry on the towel or a wig stand before you style.  Tip: Avoid using a comb or hair dryer (It gives your longer wig life and the dreaded hair loss that occurs when wigs are manipulated wet. When your wig is completely dry add a hair serum and some heat-resistant product to keep the hair soft. Use a wide-toothed comb to style your hair.
